Male and Female

In Matthew 5:36, as a part of His teaching on oath-taking, Jesus tells his listeners “And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.” Jesus is using the fact of our inability to cause even one of our hairs to grow a certain color, simply by willing it to be so. In fact, there is an entire industry of hair-coloring products built around this simple truth. We understand our inability to will our bodies to do certain things such as this. Try as I might, I cannot by my own will alone force myself to taller, shorter, thinner (I wish), or many other things. As one can probably guess via the title, this also applies to the fact of our gender.

Unless one’s primary residence has been located beneath a large, solid aggregate of one or more minerals, the issue of “gender identity” has leapt into the forefront of the media, college campuses, and even into the religious world. The LGBT community have continued their march across this country, storming the gates of our society with their sinful lifestyles and coercing our lawmakers to capitulate to their demands. Recently the stakes have been raised even higher, as members of this community wish to have us believe that one’s gender can be chosen, and changed, at will. This would result in individuals who choose a certain gender (for example, a biological male identifying himself as female) being able to use facilities designed to service a specific gender, such as bathrooms, locker rooms, etc.

As it always has, the Bible still stands as the singular source of solid ground in this world. We need desperately to return to the truth on this matter, and all matters concerning the gender of men and women. In the book of Genesis, the scriptures clearly state that mankind was created in two genders: male and female. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Gen. 1:27) “1This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. (Gen. 5:1-2) During His earthly ministry Jesus referenced these same verses in his arguments with the Pharisees over the issue of marriage and divorce in Matt.19:4 and Mark 10:6. The term “male and female” is found a total of 26 times throughout the Bible. Why would the scriptures, inspired by the Holy Spirit and complete in every way, use a term that is suddenly today a “choice” instead of an unchangeable quality of a person? Because it isn’t a choice! God created mankind with specific genders, despite what man chooses to identify themselves as. People even in the religious world have always sought to identify themselves as saved or pleasing to God, despite following what they wished to do anyway!

One’s gender cannot be chosen at will! Mankind was created by God in two separate genders, and this fact remains no matter which gender you choose to dress as, the extent of the surgical mutilation of God’s creation, or the gender of the person you decide to have sexual relations with. “Male and female He created them.” To declare anything to the contrary would be to deny the facts of the scripture. But of course that is the problem, isn’t it? The facts of the scripture are being ignored by those of the world who wish to live lives according to their own broken moral compasses, where no matter which way they turn the compass needle points back to themselves. Didn’t those who said to Jesus “Lord, Lord” in Matthew 7:21-23 seek to identify themselves as those who would be pleasing to God? Did they not even perform the same deeds (prophecy, casting out of demons, many mighty works) as those who are indeed pleasing to God? However, it was only the people who truly did the will of the Father are those who Jesus identified as pleasing to God. These men who sought to identify themselves as pleasing to God were rejected by Jesus on the day of judgment. What one identifies themselves as is irrelevant. The only thing we can do is seek to be Identified by our Father in heaven as His “good and faithful servant.” (Matt. 25:23) This fact remains no matter what gender one is born with. To seek to change it dishonors the One who created you.

The world decided long ago that truth was dead, and everything is relative and subject to change. It is no wonder that now even the truth of which gender one “identifies” with has fallen victim to this sort of thinking. Once the fact of WHO created you is thrown out, the facts of HOW God created you are not far behind! The words of Solomon ring so true in our world today: “Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.” (Prov. 23:23) We as Christians must pay any price to gain the truth, and once we have it we are not to let it go! As we see the world deviating further and further from the truth, we must understand that there are still those out there who are willing to see the truth as it really is! We as Christians must have the faith to bravely declare the truth to the world around us, despite what might happen as a result.
